Metacognition Isn’t Enough: What Makes an Agent “Wise”?

Agentic AI is crossing a quiet threshold. Systems are no longer just generating text; they plan, call tools, and make state changes that persist — tickets created, code merged, workflows triggered, access granted, users impacted.

In that regime, the question “Is it smart?” starts to matter less than a harder operational question: can an institution defend what the system did when it is audited, disputed, or reviewed after the fact?

Scaled autonomy is constrained not by capability, but by signability — whether actions remain defensible once they leave the moment of execution and enter the slower world of custody, audit, and dispute.

When an agent’s output crosses a team boundary, a provider boundary, a time boundary (weeks later, under incident pressure), or a jurisdictional boundary (security, privacy, finance, safety), the question is no longer “was it clever?” but “was it authorized, bounded, evidenced, and repairable?”
